The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics announced that 2015 O’Ceallaigh Medal will be awarded to Emeritus Jun Nishimura of the University of Tokyo. The O’Ceallaigh medal is awarded biennially to scientists who have made distinguished contributions to Cosmic Ray Physics, and the recipient is chosen by the Commission on Cosmic Rays of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. The medal is presented at the opening ceremony of the International Cosmic Ray Conference.
Prof. Nishimura received his phD degree from Tohoku University in 1948, and became an Research Assistant at RIKEN. He then held a faculty appointment as an Assistant Professor at the Institute for nuclear Study, the University of Tokyo (precursor of ICRR) in 1956. He left the institute in 1966 to take an appointment as a Professor at the Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science (ISAS) in 1966. He became the Director in 1988. He then took a position as a Professor at Kanagawa University in 1992. Prof. Nishimura retired in 1997, and continues his involvement with the university and ISAS as a Professor Emeritus.
