Title“RS Ophiuchi: the first nova detected at very high energies”
AbstractRS Ophiuchi is a recurrent symbiotic nova located in the Milky Way. It displays eruptive events once every 15 years. During its last major outburst on August 2021, it was detected at very high energies (E>100 GeV), making it the first nova discovered in this energy regime. In this presentation, I will report on the observations performed by the MAGIC telescopes, a pair of Cherenkov telescopes located in the Roque de los Muchachos observatory. The detection by MAGIC proved a hadronic origin of the gamma-ray emission, and helped understanding the contribution of novae to the cosmic ray budget.
