研究概要

主たる研究は、アインシュタインの相対性理論が予測する、時空の歪みが伝搬する現象「重力波」の直接検出です。神岡での10年の研究成果が認められ、終に総額155億円のKAGRA計画(大型低温重力波望遠鏡)が、最先端研究基盤事業として認められ、2010年より開始されます。

さらに、重力波望遠鏡の目指す究極の変位感度は、巨視的な物体としての鏡の位置決定精度が量子力学的な不確定性原理で支配されるレベルなので、逆に巨視的な物体の量子力学的振る舞いを研究する絶好の装置となりえることから、「巨視的量子力学」の研究も行っています。

最近では、NICTの井戸さんの主導のもと、神岡の極めて地面振動の少ない環境を利用し、かつ、外乱に対しても鈍感になるように形状が特別に決定された光固定共振器を使って、世界最高レベルの光周波数標準を作成する実験も始まりました。

また、地震研の新谷さん、高森さんの主導のもと、神岡鉱山の地下1000mに設置された地殻歪計による、測地学的研究も行っています。そのデータは、KAGRA計画でも利用されます。

岐阜県神岡鉱山内に3km低温鏡干渉計型重力波望遠鏡、及び3km地球歪計の建設をめざすグループ。

(注2) TAMA Collaboration

東京三鷹市国立天文台に設置されたTAMA300干渉計型重力波望遠鏡の建設・運用をおこなう共同研究グループ。

(注3) LIGO Scientific Collaboration

アメリカのCaltechとMITが中心となり、希望する世界の大学・研究者が協力者となって推進する重力波望遠鏡建設計画。1995年から始まり、2001年に初観測開始、2004年はじめての重力波発生頻度や強度に関し、上限値を与える論文を発表。もちろんまだ重力波は発見されていない。S3の観測まで共同研究者として認められている。
