Akeno Steerable LIDAR system

The Steerable LIDAR System in AKENO Observatory

The air fluorescence technique for air shower obseravation has many advantages (for example, direct measurement of shower longitudinal development, stereo geometrical reconstruction with multimple eyes). These aspects will bring technical breakthroughs in EHE Cosmic Ray physics. On the other hand, this fluorescence thechnique face a serious problem. In this technique we measure the light yielded from air showers after the transmission in atmosphere of 10 - 60 km distance. Without any monitoring, the atmospheric condition may bring large unsertainty. For the purpose of the atmospheric monitoring, we are developing a steerable LIDAR system to study the atmospheric monitoring method in Akeno Observatory.

An example of estimated transmittance

This figure shows transmittance of night sky on the Akeno Observatory. It was hazy at low altitude.
