The NASA General Coordinates Network (GCN) and the Super-Kamiokande research team have launched a new system for distributing alerts when Super-Kamiokande detects a \u201csupernova\u201d explosion. Supernovae are the implosions that massive stars undergo at the end of their life cycle. During these cataclysmic events, most of the energy is released in the form of a large flux of neutrinos. Super-Kamiokande can detect this flux if the supernova occurs within the neighborhood of the Milky Way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this upgrade, when Super-Kamiokande releases a \u201csupernova alert\u201d, the information can be shared with researchers around the world more quickly, in a more user-friendly format, and with richer details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
