This is made possibly because the muon flux produced by primary cosmic rays in the upper atmosphere is nearly constant, and therefore, any variation in its magnitude is an indicative of natural phenomenon occurring in our atmosphere and\/or in the interplanetary space. During the past two decades the GRAPES-3 team has identified a large number of events caused by geomagnetic storms in the interplanetary space. Similarly, the high voltage developed in major thunderstorm can cause the muon intensity to vary which can be used to estimate such voltages.
