It was however difficult to disentangle the gamma ray emitting processes, leaving the cosmic ray origin unsettled. We developed a new methodology which assumes that the gamma-ray counts Ng is expressed by a linear combination of two terms; one is proportional to the interstellar proton column density Np and the other proportional to the nonthermal X-ray count Nx. We interpret that the former corresponds to the hadronic component and the latter the leptonic component. We applied the scheme to the core collapse SNR RX J1713.7−3946 and derived the ratio between the hadronic and leptonic component to be ~70%:30%. This has quantified the two gamma ray origins for the first time. The dominance of the hadronic gamma rays reflects the massive interstellar protons of ∼ 10^4M⊙, target protons in the p-p reaction, associated with the SNR, lending further support for the acceleration of the cosmic-ray protons.

Reference
Y.
