KMI decided to launch the KMI school in 2018, to which we invite distinguished researchers to KMI to have them give their lectures on specific topics every year. The KMI school is intended for graduate school students and young post-docs. We would like you to encourage young members of your groups to join the KMI school. The 4th KMI school will be held with the topic “Statistical Data Analysis and Anomalies in Particle Physics and Astrophysics”. Analysis of large data samples is required in particle physics and astrophysics. To obtain physics results from such large amounts of data, methods based on advanced statistics are extensively applied. The lecture on statistical data analysis will be helpful to many researchers, including our members in KMI. In addition to the lecture, we will also have topical seminars on anomalies in particle physics and astrophysics. They might be mirages, which appear on statistical fluctuations. On the other hand, they might be hints for big discoveries. We will hold the 4th KMI school as follows: 1. Date: December 15th to 17th, 2022 (December 14th to 17th, 2022 if the lecturer cannot come to KMI and the lecture is online.) 2. Conference venue: KMI Science Symposia (ES635) in Nagoya University We will also broadcast the lectures and seminars by ZOOM for online participants. 3. Program: 1) One lecture to learn the basics of statistical data analysis as well as the tutorial course (1.5 hours x3 for lectures, 1.5 hours x3 for tutorial) “Statistical data analysis and tutorial”/ Glen Cowan (Royal Holloway, University of London) The detail of the tutorial will be announced later in the 2nd circular. 2) We will also organize topical seminars on anomalies in particle physics and astrophysics as follows (titles are tentative, about 45 min for each seminar) Anomalies in cosmology: Marco Raveri (University of Genoa) Anomalies in flavor physics: Teppei Kitahara (KMI, Nagoya University) Anomalies in energy frontier physics: Takuya Nobe (ICEPP, University of Tokyo) Neutron lifetime problem: Albert Young (North Carolina State Univ.) We are also planning seminars about muon g-2, and so on. 3) Poster session: We encourage participants to present their research results at the poster session in the KMI school. We will not limit their topics to research with data analysis, but all the topics related to particle physics and astrophysics. A presenter prize will be awarded to those who give the best presentation among them. 4. The Maximum number of on-site participants: 50 (due to the limitation of the capacity of the lecture hall under COVID-19). 5. Registration: Registration fee: FREE At present, a banquet is not planned in this school under the current infection prevention measures. School indico and registration pages are now opened in: https://agenda.hepl.phys.nagoya-u.ac.jp/indico/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=2104 # Applicants for on-site participation from overseas Deadline for registration: October 5th,2022 We request applicants to ask supervisors to send recommendation letters to KMIschool2022 [at] kmi.nagoya-u.ac.jp if they are ph-D students. Please notice that 1) All on-site participants from overseas need to apply for a visa newly issued by Embassies or Consulates or the Consular Office of Japan with the receipt certificate of ELFS (Entrants, Returnees Follow-up System) after we register them in ELFS. 2) Please check Japanese Border Measures https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/covid-19/bordercontrol.html These rules may be changed by the situation of COVID-19. # Domestic applicants or applicants for online participation Deadline of registration: November 11th 、2022. 6.
