Number of openings About 1 2. Research fields Research field is not specified. We require the applicant to pioneer his or her own curiosity-driven interdisciplinary research field. 3. Qualifications - Self-disciplined scientists with a long-term vision of the next generation of scientific endeavor - Ability and research record to preside over own autonomous laboratory - Young and talented scientists with less than 10 years since receiving PhD or equivalent qualifications. (Also open to applicants who are few years over the qualification if they have significant research achievements.) - Open to all nationalities 4. Budget, rights and responsibilities (1) 100 million yen to start and maintain a new laboratory, to be distributed over a period of 5 years (2) The Associate Chief Scientist is eligible to apply for competitive funding from within and outside RIKEN. (3) The right to appoint fixed-term researchers; host Special Postdoctoral Researchers and Junior Research Associates; and apply for the purchase of commodities, research funds, and laboratory space. (4) The responsibility to oversee the work of all laboratory members; manage the laboratory budget; and manage the maintenance and use of all laboratory equipment and instruments. (5) The Associate Chief Scientist does not have the right to appoint tenured researchers. (However, a scientist who is already a tenured researcher at RIKEN can transfer to a laboratory headed by an Associate Chief Scientist.) 5. Remuneration Annual salary A commuting allowance and a housing allowance are available. Social insura andatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). Recipients of JASSO category 1 scholarship FY2003. Eligible to apply for external funding (kakenhi grants-in-aid and the like). 6. Type of employment and location Fulltime, tenured position, subject to RIKEN’s mandatory retirement age of 60. Laboratory location will be decided according to the nature of the research undertaken. 7. Starting date of employment April 1, 2016 (in principle) 8.
