Effects of Galactic Cosmic Rays on Climate and Weather

Cosmogenic nuclides in tree rings and ice cores have revealed that the 11-year/22-year cycles of solar activity and the incident galactic cosmic rays change in time associated with long-term changes of solar activity level. The pattern of the 22-year variation in galactic cosmic rays also changes associated with the long-term change in the large-scale structure of heliospheric magnetic field. During the Maunder Minimum, for example, the lengths of the 11-year and the 22-year cycles had been stretched to about 14 years and 28 years. The pattern of the 28-year cycle turned out to be unique, probably associated with the more flattened heliospheric current sheet during the time. It has caused 30-50% increase of incident cosmic rays, lasting only ~1 year, at every other minima of the 14-year cycles. The drift effect of cosmic rays seems to have played an important role in solar modulation during this period of sunspot absence. The stable isotopes from the same tree rings have shown that climate had the same 28-year pattern during the time. It suggests, although the detailed mechanism is not revealed yet, that (1) galactic cosmic rays play a role in climate change, and that (2) the structure of the heliospheric magnetic field is an important factor determining the pattern of climate change through modulation of cosmic rays.

Our group also analyzed global cloud-height data to trace the recipiency and the propagation of cosmic ray effects. Cosmic rays, as well as solar irradiance, have 27-day variations due to solar rotations. We have found that 27-day variations are found in cloud-height change around the tropical area at the 11-year solar maxima.

Here, we present results on cosmic-ray and climate variations around the Maunder Minimum, and on the cloud data analyses for the past 30 years.
