CRIS 2004 Cosmic Ray International Seminar "GZK and Surroundings" Catania, Italy, May 31 - June 4, 2004 SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT ------------------------------------------------------------------------- We would like to bring to your attention again the Cosmic Ray International Seminar (CRIS 2004) "GZK and Surroundings", which will be held in Catania from May 31 through June 4, 2004 and will be devoted to high energy cosmic ray physics and related questions. We invite you to visit or re-visit the CRIS 2004 Web site http://www.ct.infn.it/~cris/ which has been updated with more detailed information about the logistic and scientific aspects of the Conference. In particular, *** PRE-REGISTRATION AND ABSTRACT SUBMISSION IS NOW OPEN *** You can conveniently pre-register and submit an abstract directly from your Web browser. A updated preliminary list of speakers is already available in the Conference web page. CRIS 2004 scientific topics: The CRIS 2004 Conference will focus on ultra high energy cosmic rays close to the GZK cutoff, predicted by K. Greisen and, independently, by G.T.Zatsepin and V.A. Kuz'min in 1966. The very fact of the detection of events with primary energy larger than the GZK cutoff, the controversial discrepancy still existing between experimental data, the wide spectrum of hypothesis about the origin of ultra high energy cosmic rays and their nature poses a most fundamental problem from a theoretical point of view. On the experimental side, a new generation of experiments is being planned or is just completing installation and starting to take data of unprecedented accuracy (for example, the Pierre Auger Observatory). This makes the present moment most timely as strong new data will soon play a crucial role in the understanding of the problem of the nature, origin, acceleration mechanism and anisotropy of ultra high energy cosmic rays. High energy neutrino detection is also possible and it will be of greatest importance. The Conference venue will be the Hotel Nettuno (http://www.hotel-nettuno.it) a comfortable hotel in down town Catania by the seaside. We plan to host all participants in the Conference Hotel or in a couple of less expensive Hotels. CRIS 2004 is organized by the Catania Section of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and the University of Catania. The International Advisory Committee is made of V. Berezinsky (INFN,LNGS-Italy) K.-H. Kampert (Wuppertal, Germany) V.A. Kuz'min (Mosca, Russia) E. Iarocci (Roma, Italy) G. Miele (Napoli, Italy) E. Migneco (Catania, Italy) G. Navarra (Torino, Italy) P. Privitera (Roma, Italy) L. Scarsi (Palermo, Italy) M. Teshima (Muenchen, Germany) A.A.
