茨城大理 柳田昭平 東大ICRR 森正樹 -------------------------------------------------------- Announcement International Symposium “The Universe viewed in gamma-rays ---University of Tokyo Workshop 2002---” September 25-28, 2002, in Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan Dear Colleages, We are pleased to announce that the international symposium entitled “The Universe viewed in gamma-rays ---The University of Tokyo Workshop 2002---” will be held on September 25-28, 2002 in Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan. The purpose of this symposium is to discuss the new views of the universe grasped mainly in the rapidly developing high energy gamma-ray astrophysics in the energy range above 10 GeV. New ground-based observatories of very high energy gamma-rays are being built, energy threshold are being lowered, and stereoscopic observations with new telescopes will be started soon. The symposium will cover observational and theoretical aspects of Galactic and extragalactic sources of gamma-rays which contribute to the existence of nonthermal particles in the universe. Information of the photons in other energy regime is mandatory to uncover the secret of very high energy phenomena in the universe and multiwavelength campaigns will be also. The following topics will be picked up for four areas. 1. Galactic sources Supernova remnants Galactic center Pulsars and nebulae Diffuse emission from the galactic disk and unidentified EGRET sources 2. Extragalactic sources Star burst galaxies Blazars Gamma-ray bursts Cluster of galaxies 3. Acceleration and distribution of cosmic rays Direct observation of cosmic rays Shock acceleration in various objects Particle acceleration associated with structure formation 4. Cosmology Diffuse infrared background radiation Dark matter Etc. Review talks will be given by invited talkers for overview of recent achievements in each four areas. Other than these invited talks, presentation consists of general oral talks and poster papers. Papers will be published. In addition to the main stream of the symposium, mini-workshop is scheduled to survey the present day and future techniques of ground-based measurements of gamma-rays. Those who are interested in the symposium are requested to fill in the questionnaire attached at the end of this mail and to send it to Ms. Noriko Kobayashi (noriko [at] icrr.u-tokyo.ac.jp) by E-mail. The venue of the symposium will be “Sawayaka Chiba Kanmin Plaza” near the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR) of the University Tokyo, in Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan. Kashiwa City is located 30 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. (See also URL below for information: http://www.city.kashiwa.chiba.jp/foreign/foreign.htm ) Further workshop information, such as the invited talkers, registration fees, accommodation, access to the venue, important time lines, etc., will be sent in the First Circular, to be distributed by email in the mid of April.
