Research Fellow in High Energy Astrophysics

A post-doctoral position is available for a period of two years in the
Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Leeds, to work on
experimental investigations on ultra high energy cosmic rays in
association with the Pierre Auger Observatory.

Within this large international collaboration the Leeds High Energy
Astrophysics group plays a major role in the construction of the
instrument and in the analysis of the experimental data.  The
Observatory is under construction in Argentina and data from a first set
of detectors, the engineering array, are available.  The experiment will
consist ultimately of a 3000 km^2 air shower array of water Cerenkov
detectors operated in combination with air fluorescence detectors (see
http://www.auger/org for details).

The applicant is expected to contribute to detector setup, data analysis
of the engineering array, development of event reconstruction algorithms
for energy, arrival direction and primary mass, and to numerical shower
and detector simulations.

Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant area of experimental
astroparticle or particle physics and experience in software
development, numerical simulations and data management.  The appointee
may be required to spend some time at the experiment site in Argentina.

Salary will be on the scale for Research Staff Grade 1A within the range
pounds 17000-24000 p.a. according to qualifications and relevant
