The workshop information is available from the Workshop Web page; http://psux1.kek.jp/~nufact01/index.html. 1. General Information: - ----------------------- A neutrino factory is a neutrino source based on a muon storage ring to produce high-intensity energetic neutrinos, either electron- and muon-neutrinos and their anti-neutrinos. They are produced from decays of the muons in the straight section(s) of the muon storage ring. The energy of neutrino beams ranges from a few GeV to several 10 GeV. A number of neutrinos of about 10^{20}-10^{21} neutrinos/year/straight section is aimed. The beam intensity thus anticipated is about 100 times the present intensity of conventional beams based on pion decays in the high energy region. It is firmly believed that a neutrino factory would open great opportunity for significant progress in neutrino physics in future. The first workshop of this series was held in Lyon, France, in 1999, and the second one was held in Monterey, U.S. in 2000. In the past two meetings, physics potential and feasibility of neutrino factories based on a muon storage ring were extensively discussed. Enthusiasm of the realization has grown significantly. Since then, further extensive studies are being undertaken in US and CERN, as well as in Japan. Therefore, it is quite timely to have this workshop in Japan, May 2001. Another important emphasis, which has happened timely, is the approval of the KEK/JAERI Joint Project in Japan, constructing the 50-GeV proton synchrotron of about 1 Mega-watt beam power. It would provide a great opportunity to construct a neutrino factory in Japan in future. And it would be useful for all the scientists in the world to carry out necessary R&D works for a neutrino factory and a mu^{+}mu^{-} collider, with this high intensity proton beam. 2. Scientific Programs: - ----------------------- The workshop will start on the morning of May 24th (Thu.) and will end in the afternoon of May 30th (Wed.). On May 27th (Sun.), we have one day off (when excursion might be arranged). The workshop consists of plenary talks and parallel working group sessions. Since this workshop the tentative allocation of the plenary talks and working group sessions can be seen in the Web page. 2.1 Plenary Talks: NuFACT'01 Plenary Talk Schedule: May 24 (Thu) - ------------ 9:00 - 9:15 H.
