It is located 130km (85miles) from Warsaw , almost in the very centre of Poland. Due to favourable position of Lodz on the cross-roads between the Western and Eastern markets, at the first half of the XIX century, it became an important industrial centre, attracting investors from Germany, Austria, and Russia as well as thousands of peasants from the surrounding area who came here is search for employment. For many years the city was a real melting-pot of different nationalities, most notably Poles, Jews and Germans, but also Russians and Czechs. This multicultural mosaic is still evident in the streets of Lodz, its architecture, and its cemeteries. Lodz is also a city of culture, and is often referred to as the capital of Polish film. The most renowned Polish film directors such as Krzysztof Kieslowski, Roman Polanski and Andrzej Wajda are all graduates of the Lodz Film School. The Museum of Art in Lodz has the largest collection of contemporary art in Central Europe devoted especially to the Constructivist tradition. Lodz is also an important academic centre with seven academic institutions: University of Lodz, Lodz Technical University, Medical Academy, Military Medical Academy, Academy of Fine Arts, Lodz Academy of Music and Lodz Film and Drama School. Typical temperatures during July in Lodz are 20-22 C (during the day) and 15-18 C (at night). In the last years the weather during the summer was variable. Sometimes July was dry without almost no rain (e.g. last year) or quite humid with frequent rains (e.g. 2 years ago). ------------------ Travel Information ------------------ By plane: There are flight connections from many European countries to Warsaw, Cracow, Poznan and Gdansk. The Warsaw is the closest place and the most useful to reach Lodz in short time (the name of the Warsaw airport is OKECIE). There are train connections every 2 hours from the Warsaw Central Station (Dworzec Centralny) to the Lodz Station (Lodz Fabryczna). It takes about 1.5 hour. However, the best connection which allows to avoid the change of place in Warsaw from the airport to the railway station is the shuttle bus (called POLSKI EXPRESS) leaving directly from the Warsaw Airport to Lodz Central Railway Station every 2 hours. The travel takes about 2 hours. The tickets can be bought at the airport on the right from the right exit (the price is about 25 zl (~ 6$ US). The money can be changed at the airport. By train: Direct train connections to Lodz are from the Czech Republik, Germany and Russia. By car: Lodz is located about 400 km from the German border and about 350 km from the southern border of Poland. The price of petrol is now about 0.7$ US per litre (increasing slightly with time). The roads are not particularly good (no high-ways). It is recommended to park the car at the protected parking places. ------------- Registration ------------- Registration forms can be obtained from the WWW site at the Local Organizing Committee: http://fizjlk.fic.uni.lodz.pl/ECRS2000.htm Participants are requested to complete the registration and accomodation forms. -------------------------------------------------------------------- The registration deadline including hotel reservation is 30 April 2000 -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Symposium fee is 100 US dollars, after the deadline - 120 US dollars. The fee includes the abstract book, the copy of the Symposium proceedings (invited talks) and social events including half of the banquet price. The symposium fee should be paid by checks to: Division of Experimental Physics, University of Lodz, Poland, ECRS2000 (please do not use travel and EURO checks and remember to add "ECRS2000"!). The checks should be sent to the following address: Division of Experimental Physics, University of Lodz, ECRS2000, ul. Pomorska 149/153, 90-236 Lodz, Poland. It is also possible to pay by bank transfer to the University of Lodz bank account: Bank PKO SA Grupa Pekao SA II O/Lodz 10801154-5555-300-80300 ECRS2000 (Please, don't forget to add "ECRS2000"). ------------------ Hotel Accomodation ------------------ We recommend accomodation in the Hotel of the Conference Center of the University of Lodz which is about 5 min walk from the Physics Building - the place of Symposium. The hotel price for one night per one person is ~25 $ US in a single room and ~ 20 $ US per person in a double room. There is also a possibility of other accomodation: Hotels in the center of the city: Price per night per person: Hotel Savoy: 25-40 $ US, breakfast included, Hotel Centrum: 40-80 $ US, breakfast included. The Student House: 12 $ US, breafast not included. The Student House is about 10 min walk from the Physics Building. --------- Abstracts --------- Abstracts of the papers relevant to the scientific program of the Symposium should be submitted via e-mail to the LOC (ecrs2000 [at] kfd2.fic.uni.lodz.pl) on the abstract forms which are available from the www page of LOC. The deadline for abstracts is 31 March 2000. Authors of the contributed papers should indicate their preference for oral talk or poster and mark the main topic of the paper by specifing one from three topics listed below. One of the authors of the poster presentation must be present during Symposium. The main topics: SH - Solar and heliospheric phenomena, OG - Origin of cosmic rays (acceleration and propagation) and gamma-ray astronomy, HE - High energy cosmic rays (interactions, EAS, muons, neutrinos, etc). About acceptance of abstracts participants will be informed after 30 April 2000. Please indicate also the number of oral and poster presentations on the application form. -------------------- Workshop Proceedings -------------------- We plan to publish the abstracts of the papers presented by the authors and distribute them at the time of the Symposium. After Symposium the invited talks will be published in a separate volume. ------- Support ------- We hope that we will have some (although very limited) possibility to support financially some participants during the Symposium. The requests for the financial support should be sent via e-mail to the address: ECRS2000 [at] kfd2.fic.uni.lodz.pl, before 30th April 2000. Those who are interested will be informed about our decision before May 31st. ---- Visa ---- Participants from those countries from which the entrance visa is required should indicate this in the application form. We will send them official invitation needed for the visa purpose or if it is needed for the administration of the parent institution of the delegate. ------------------ Calendar of Events ------------------ 31 March 2000 abstract deadline 30 April 2000 second circular 30 April 2000 deadline for registration and payment of the fee 23-28 July 2000 Symposium. ----------------- Contact Addresses ----------------- Local Organizing Committee -------------------------- Secretary Wlodek Bednarek Division of Experimental Physics, University of Lodz, ul.
