I suppose some of the CRC members might be interested. Although the official letter of invitation was sent to the presumed speakers only, participation is open. (Some presentation can be accomodated, too, if prior contact is made to one of the organizers). Because this subject is related to AGASA and TA-plan, too, I am sending this information to you. If you (and CRC) considers it meaningful to other CRC members, please freely distribute. Best regards, Yoshiyuki Takahashi The University of Alabama in Huntsville **************************************************** Community Meeting on The Observation of Extremely High Energy Particles and Neutrinos Dear XXXXXXX, The convergence of fundamental physics and astrophysics is one of the emergent themes of 20th century scientific inquiry, a development which seems destined only to grow in importance. At the beginning of the century, the cosmic ray "beam" was used to give birth to particle physics. In the last decade of the century, measurements of neutrinos generated in SN, the sun and earth's atmosphere tell us about neutrino mass, while suggestions to explain measurements of the highest energy particles incident on the earth have consequences for both cosmology and particle physics. We are lucky enough to live in a time of confusion and ferment. In particular, observation of EHE particles and neutrinos and the attendant theoretical issues are areas of increasing urgency and interest. The occasion of the 26th ICRC in Salt Lake City would seem an ideal time for members of our community to meet for a discussion of the possibilities and perspectives. In this regard, we are here pleased to invite you to meetings planned at the ICRC for the evenings of Friday and Saturday August 20 and 21. The purpose of these forums is to discuss the scope and the limitations of the existing theoretical models and predictions, and the observational means of exploring EHECR particles and neutrinos. The format we propose as most conducive to exchange of ideas is informal (i.e. only semi-organized), interactive discussion in each of two sessions; an observational and a theoretical session. Attendees are encouraged to bring their ideas and possibly viewgraphs for making "short" (< 10 minute) presentations. We realize that the suggested forum format, short presentations as a springboard to discussion is unusual, and has a certain potential for chaos. However, we hope it also has a certain potential for stimulating thought. Time at the ICRC is limited and valuable, but we ask your participation if your schedule allows. A tentative program of topics and suggested speakers is listed below. We know that not all will be able to attend, but it is particularly our hope that your expertise on some (or all) of these topics will be shared and can be developed in discussions with other scientists during and after the ICRC. Please advise us whether you can come to one or both of the forums. This will help us in planning to provide some structure to the forums. Finally, please note that a workshop dedicated to the topic of EHE neutrinos is being planned for November at UCLA, co-organized by David Cline and Floyd Stecker. Sincerely, Bob Streitmatter Yoshi Takahashi Roberto Stalio Livio Scarsi John Krizmanic - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A (nonexclusive) list of suggested topics: (1) Neutrino oscillations (tau and sterile), (2) Concentrated relic neutrinos in Clusters, Z-0 bursts (3) Neutrinos from Gamma Ray Bursts and Blazers/Radio Galaxies, (4) Topological defects and extremely heavy relic particles (5) AGNs (6) Photopion neutrinos (7) Is relativity testable by EHE gamma rays and neutrinos? (8) Other good ideas ?? (A) Theory Forum: August 20th, 5:40 - 7:40 p.m., following regular Session. Note that while we have scheduled a two hour session, if interest is high and discussion warrants, dawn is the limit. (We'll send out for pizza!) Suggested forum speakers, (others are welcome): While we have included by each name the number of a topic which we have guessed they might wish particularly to discuss, these are not restrictive, and we welcome all contributions and thoughts. Jiro Arafune(1), John Bahcall(3), Vanya Berezinsky(6), Peter Biermann(5), David Cline (1), Tom Gaisser(1), Francis Halzen(1), Michael Hillas(5), Ray Protheroe(5), Mike Salamon(5), Humitaka Sato(2), Gunther Sigl(4), Floyd Stecker(6), Toshiki Tajima (3), Mario Vietri(3), Eli Waxman(3), Tom Weiler(2), Shigeru Yoshida(2) (B) Observational Forum: August 21 Saturday evening 5:40 following the regular session. The purpose of the Observational Forum is to discuss the degree and manner in which the listed issues and others raised in the Theory Forum might be addressed observationally. As not everyone attending this forum will have been able to attend the Theory Forum, we will attempt to prepare and present at the opening of the Observational Forum, a brief summary on the Theory Forum. Suggested forum speakers, (others are welcome): General (John Linsley / Arnold Wolfendale / George Zatsepin) Auger Laboratory (Jim Cronin / Alan Watson) Hi-Res (Pierre Sokolsky) AGASA (Masahiro Teshima) > PeV Gamma Observatories (Tadashi Kifune / Gaurang Yodh) Telescope Array (Masaki Fukushima / Katsushi Arisaka) AMANDA-ICECUBE (KM^3) (Steve Barwick / Dave Nygren) Super-K and K2K (Takaaki Kajita / John Learned) KLYPVE (Michael Panasyuk / Emmanuel Fokitis) OWL-AIRWATCH (Bob Streitmatter - Yoshi Takahashi / Roberto Stalio - Livio Scarsi)
