Scientific Objectives High energy astrophysical phenomena such as gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be the sources of high energy cosmic rays and photons. Recent progress in numerical magnetohydrodynamics and particle simulations has enabled us to study the formation of relativistic outflows and acceleration of high energy particles by direct numerical simulations. Moreover, the radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations are identifying the location of particle acceleration. This mini-workshop brings together scientists who are studying acceleration of cosmic plasmas and particles through observational, theoretical and/or numerical methods. In this workshop, we hope to push forward the collaboration between the communities of high energy particle astrophysics, high energy astrophysics and plasma astrophysics. 2. Organizing Committee Ryoji Matsumoto (Chair), Shigeru Yoshida (Co-chair), Tomoyuki Hanawa, Tomoyoshi Ito, Hideyuki Kawai, and Shigeki Miyaji [Chiba University] This workshop will be held as a part of the priority research project sponsored by the graduate school of science and technology, Chiba University. The mission of this project is to carry out collaborative research on high energy astrophysics and astroparticle physics. 3. Workshop Plan This workshop will be held from March 2 to March 4, 2005. We focus on the following topics. Theories, simulations, and observations of (1) Particle acceleration (2) Gamma ray bursts and supernovae (3) Relativistic jets and winds (4) High energy cosmic rays (HiRes/TA) (5) High energy gamma rays (MAGIC) (6) High energy neutrinos (AMANDA/IceCUBE) We will have 2-3 key talks on each topic and call for contributed talks. 4. Invited Speakers E. Bernardini (DESY), F. Goebel (MPI), H. Hirabayashi (JAXA), M. Hoshino (Tokyo), N. Kawai (Tokyo Inst. Tech), S. Koide (Toyama), E. Liang (Rice), Y. Lyubarsky (Ben-Grion), M. Lyutikov (British Columbia), Y. Muraki (STE), S. Nagataki (Kyoto), D. Paneque (MPI), W. Springer (Utah), Telescope Array experiment (TBD) 5. Registration Please fill out the registration form attached below and send it by e-mail to ca2005 [at] astro.s.chiba-u.ac.jp by Jan. 7, 2005. If you propose a contributed talk, the title and abstract should be included in the registration form. Registration fee is 1000 yen, which includes coffee/tea service, and the abstract book. Please pay the registration fee at the registration desk. We will only accept Japanese yen. Credit cards will not be accepted. 6. Banquet We will have a banquet on March 3. The banquet fee is 6000 yen (4000 yen for students). Please pay at the registration desk. We will only accept Japanese yen. Credit cards will not be accepted. 7. Schedule Dec. 6, 2004 : First circular Jan. 7, 2005 : Deadline for registration and abstract Jan. 25, 2005 : Second circular including program Mar. 2-4, 2005: Meeting 8. Travel Support Only very limited amount of travel support is possible. If you need travel support seriously, please contact ca2005 [at] astro.s.chiba-u.ac.jp by e-mail. Except the invited speakers, we can support only the domestic expenses after arrival at the Tokyo-Narita airport. 9. Transportation Chiba University is located between the Narita("New Tokyo") International Airport and the downtown Tokyo. We are in the Nishi-Chiba ("West Chiba") campus, the main campus of the Chiba University. The easiest way to access to our campus from the Narita Airport is to catch the JR line to Chiba. From the Chiba station that the train from the airport directly takes you, transfer to the JR sobu line local. The Nishi-Chiba station, the closest station to the campus is just a station ride from Chiba, which takes 3 minutes. This JR Sobu line takes off at Chiba every 10 minute or so, and it is real easy from Chiba to Nishi-Chiba. The University is right in front of the Nishi-Chiba station. 10. Lodging We are going to arrange lodging for attendants from abroad. We have limited number of rooms available in the university guest house. We can also book hotel rooms near the campus. Please let us know your first - third preferable choice of the options listed below. We try to follow your preference as much as we can, but reservations we will make for you is first-in first-out basis. Options Room Rate University Guest House : 2000 yen (Cash only) Twin Room (Double Occupancy) : 11000 yen (Preferably cash but credit cards acceptable) Double Room (Single Occupancy): 7500 yen Single room : 6500 yen Single room (Cheap, small) : 5800 yen 11. Visa Depending on your nationality, you may be required to obtain a VISA to enter Japan. Please check by yourself at http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/index.html if this applies to you or not. If a VISA is required, please make contact with the nearest Japanese Embassy/consulate general as soon as possible and also inform us required documents by email : ca2005 [at] astro.s.chiba-u.ac.jp 12.
