He had a fall in a remote place owned by his daughter and broke his hip. He had been having a lot of problems with his balance and his diabetes over the last several months. The latter problems seem to have complicated the operation and he died in intensive care. It is likely that there will be a memorial event and a cremation on 29 September which would have been Jim's 85th birthday. That is the wish of Jim's widow, Carol, at the moment. She herself is recovering from a very serious operation. As well as been a very close scientific colleague, Jim had been one of my closest friends for nearly 30 years.
