Prof. Cesarsky was formerly president of the International Astronomical Union and the director of the European Southern Observatory. We are looking forward to welcoming you to and seeing you at the seminar. --------------------- Date and Time: April 2nd, 10:00-12:00 Place : KEK Bldg.3 Seminar Hall Title　　　　： Ambitious European programs in astronomy Speaker : Catherine CESARSKY (IRFU/Sap, CEA Saclay, France) Abstract : Europe has been progressively capable of realizing ambitious programs in astronomy, mostly thanks to the creation, 50 years ago, of two organizations, ESO and ESA. ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is dedicated to astronomy from the ground. ESO has established 2 observatories in Chile, La Silla and Paranal, and is running a third, ALMA, in collaboration with North America and East Asia.
