Starting with the development of the pixel detector for the CMS experiment at the LHC accelerator it is shown how this advanced detector technology has been carried over into the field of photon science. The presentation will also describe the design requirements and the current performance of the CMS pixel detector and how this is related to the parameters for a successful pixel system for photon science. In the case of the PILATUS pixel system, this is illustrated for its application in protein crystallography.
