Their detection principle is based on the collection of electrons liberated by ionising particles in a thin, low doping, sensitive volume (e.g. epitaxial layer). Being designed in CMOS technology, the sensors may combine particle detection and signal processing on the same substrate. Their development for subatomic physics has started more than a decade ago, and has proven to provide sensors suited to a wide panel of applications. They are particularly well adapted to vertex detectors because of their high granularity, low material budget and integrated data processing functionnalities. The talk will provide an overview of the performances obtained with CMOS sensors of the MIMOSA series developed at IPHC-Strasbourg in collaboration with IRFU-Saclay, and of their current and projected applications. Present industrial processes do not yet allow to take full advantage of the technology potential. An outlook will be given, showing how these ultimate detection performances may be obtained.
